Meet the sisters behind Kinfolk

It started with too many books and an idea we couldn’t shake

Kinfolk started with two sisters who have always shared stories, recommendations, and entirely too many “you have to read this” texts.

What began as a bookstore became something bigger. A place built around conversation, curiosity, and finding your people.

We grew up wishing this existed

We grew up in a small town in southeast Indiana where bookstore trips felt special because they weren’t something we could do every day. The Scholastic Book Fair might as well have been a holiday. It was rows of books, little treasures, and that feeling that you were about to discover something meant just for you. That feeling stuck with us.

When we started Kinfolk in 2024, the idea was simple: bring more books, more authors, and more access to communities like the one we grew up in. But, somewhere along the way, we realized the thing we cared about most wasn’t just getting books into people’s hands.

It was what happened next.

A recommendation becomes a conversation.

And sometimes, a conversation becomes your people.

Kinfolk is for the reader who needs to talk about the ending immediately. The person who rereads the same comfort book every year. The teenager looking for a story that makes them feel less alone. The person who reads one book a year and the person who reads one hundred.

Around here, there are no guilty pleasures and no reading required to earn your place. Your yum is your yum.

We don’t care if your favorite book won an award, lives permanently on BookTok, has dragons on the cover, or has been sitting untouched on your nightstand for six months.

McKenna - Brand + Experience
Usually thinking about how Kinfolk looks, feels, sounds, and brings people together. McKenna handles the brand, creative direction, marketing, Reading Circle, events, and all the little details that make Kinfolk feel like Kinfolk.
Lauren - Curation + Operations
Usually thinking about what belongs on the shelves and how to make the whole thing actually work. Lauren handles inventory, buying, vendors, finances, fulfillment, and the books we’re most excited to put in your hands.
